Canadian Waterbombers Helping California’s Fire Crisis

The latest California fires have raised the cost of poor forest and land management practices by the Newsome Democrat government to heights no one could foresee.

The Golden State is being humbled by extreme weather conditions and poor land management and unwise spending. It’s creating the setting for the worst disaster in US history in the north area of Los Angels.  The origin of these deadly fires is believed to have been at the back of a home in a community in the mountains. New video shows fire under power lines, which is a common source for California fires. That story will likely evolve and take headlines soon.

The Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom and LA mayor Karen Bass and their party’s ideology put human safety at risk (residents and firefighters) and the duo have no real plan to fight such major fires. The Democrat ideology was apparently of climate and carbon emissions responsibility.  Yet these fires are unleashing millions of tons of carbon into the atmosphere. They’ve been punishing California businesses and torturing California homeowners and taxpayers, but the Governor is not willing to take responsibility for his government’s own carbon emissions.

Hopefully, an election in 2025 will ensure new responsible government to prevent these catastrophes in beautiful California. Let’s move to call an early election.

The amount of carbon dioxide released by California wildfires are comparable to the emissions from millions of cars. In 2020, California wildfires released an estimated 112 million metric tons of Carbon, similar to the amount of carbon in the lumber of 6.3 million homes — California Air Resources Board.

Now we know that waterbombers and outside firefighters must be part of a major California fire emergency, for fast response to save human lives. Human life is not cheap, it is precious and sometimes politics takes us away from that fact. It’s hard to believe California doesn’t have such firefighting resources given the geography and weather patterns there.

24 people have been killed in the Malibu/Pacific Palisade fires, while 20+ more remain missing. More bodies are expected to be discovered as investigators comb through the fire debris. It’s a tragic loss for both wealthy and average income Californians.

Cost of these Latest Fires is Hard to Fathom

The estimated cost of $150 billion at first seemed ludicrous, but as the Santa Ana winds begin to blow strong again, it’s not out of the question. Almost the entire city of Pacific Palisades was leveled.

4 huge fires have been downgraded to 2 active fires, however with 70 mph winds likely in the area east of Malibu and Pacific Palisades, smoldering charcoal might once again flair up into another dangerous set of storms threatening areas south closer to the heart of Los Angeles.

To help our California friends, Canada is sending both water bombers and firefighter personnel to the state. The Canadian water bombers built by Canadian manufacturers Canadair and Bombardier are an intelligent asset to manage massive forest fires so typical in Canada.  The water capacity is astounding. Skilled pilots operate these planes to scoop up 1,500 gallons of water at 100 miles per hour and drop it precisely onto wildfires.

Close Allies Against a Dangerous World

The US and Canada have long been closest friends, our cultures, values and resources shared and intertwined. Despite President Trump’s short-sighted threat of heavy tariffs on Canadian goods, Canada sees beyond the faux paus to long standing friendship.  I’m sure the President will work out an appropriate solution with the incoming new Prime Minister of Canada.

Firefighting is just one example of how our two nations can work together to solve our challenges, challenges no one else cares about.

Alberta, B.C. and Quebec have so far sent resources to combat the fires in California, while Ontario (Sault Ste. Marie and Dryden) is said to be preparing bombers to make the long journey according to a report in Sootoday.com. The Canadair waterbomber in particular was getting rave reviews in helping with the fires, until a drone slammed into a wing of one of the planes and grounded the whole fleet.

An accident (or attack on the Canadian planes) was not foreseen. It seems a whole new view of safety and security must evolve within both Canada and the United States. From arson to aerial attack, nothing is really out of the question anymore.

Ontario is prepared to deploy Incident Command System personnel, two CL-415 waterbombers, trained wildland and urban firefighters, associated firefighting equipment and approximately 200 personnel with about 120 kg of equipment per person. “Ontario stands ready to support our neighbours to the south, and will provide aircraft, personnel and equipment needed to support California,” said Graydon Smith, minister of Natural Resources for Ontario — From sootoday.com report.

New California Fire Forecast

Santa Ana winds are about to rake across the region and rekindle smoldering charcoal.

New areas of Los Angeles County, Orange County, Ventura County, Riverside County and San Diego County receive warnings from NWS.  NWS had red flag warnings in place in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, San Bernadino, Orange, Riverside, and San Diego counties.

Rebuilding Northwest LA’s Economy Won’t be Easy or Quick

The fires will have a major impact on the Los Angeles housing market and Malibu housing market, with rebuilding taking years and billions of dollars. Inflation could be a real effect in the aftermath in 2025 as tens of thousands of residents need housing elsewhere for extended periods. Until President Trump posed tariff penalties against Canada, the 2025 inflation forecast was quite rosy.  The combined effect of higher inflation and massive debt in California is creating anguish.

Not all residents had home insurance coverage and could be looking at total losses or underwater mortgages and bankruptcy. Financial help is coming from the Feds, but President Trump might limit how much will be sent as he takes office next week.

Home insurance in California will certainly rise significantly and many new homebuyers will find new home insurance policies unaffordable, which is a prerequisite for home loans. This same problem has already impacted the Florida housing market and it is showing signs of a major correction and house prices falling.

It will take some time for the California housing market to recover and the local economies will be taking a massive hit. Let’s cross our fingers that conditions this week will be mild and the flames not rekindled.  Our brave Canadian firefighters are there to help Californians, and we’re here to help in many other ways too. Great partners in shared economies.

See more on the California housing market.
