How to Make Your Traveler Audience Feel Good

The real goal of travel marketing is to make travelers feel good — about themselves and their wish to travel.

For travelers, the dream is filled with memories, emotions, expectations and as well, thoughts about themselves. Whether they’re struggling with the commitment to travel or not, or just need to make it come true, we need to empathize with them and show support for their dream in our web and social media content.

In my posts, I frequently say that a traveler’s heart and mind travel first. Those two parts of a person perk right up when there’s any mention of travel. And your travel advisors know how just mentioning a destination sets their biological pathways afire — the beginnings of something very compelling, and a process of frustration release, awakening, satisfaction and personal renewal. And that’s only the beginning.

The real sales conversion process happens when your content captures the full power of their travel intent. When they arrive, we’re capturing that potential and converting it into a booking — and a feel-good travel content strategy is what gets it done.

Their feelings about the trip are likely more complex than is apparent though. Otherwise, they would book right away after seeing a photo of a beautiful beach and a trip offer (your banner ad).

Memories Power up Dreams

Travelers remember the release of muscle tension, lower blood pressure, and the realization that they are important. They deserve to feel good. This is part of their personal awakening. Those memories make physical sensations even stronger powering up strong emotions that will drive their next travel booking decision. We can design and create content pieces that reactivate all those memories.

If feeling good/confident is the priority, then our content content and messaging is what builds this strength within them. Our professionally developed and purposeful plan focused on them and it’ll capture them in such a way that you will have no rivals. This is the deep connection that creates obsession with your company and brand.

How Does Your Content Support the Feel Good Vibe?

And while we’re speaking of “feeling good,” it’s not the case where every potential traveler is a basket case and needs a holiday. Many travelers feel very good about their daily lives and might only need a distraction to ease feelings of boredom or that something is missing. Because good feelings encompass a wide range of physical and psychological states.

We should know all of them well, because they drive travel bookings. They are the essence of travel sales as any advisor who sells face to face will tell you.

By the end of this article, you’ll likely realize why your travel website content and messaging is missing the mark and what you can do to improve to where your content builds such enthusiasm, belief and certainty, that they’ll be obsessing over their next booking with you.

Please do share this post with your advisors. They live in this emotional realm of communications and fulfillment, and will enjoy this discussion.

YouTube is a Great Medium for Capturing Emotion

Travel Youtubers Naick and Kim produced an amazing 20-minute European excursion video.  Their video makes Barcelona, Spain seem very inviting, rich with meaning and experience, to those who crave the European travel adventure. Good feelings emanate from how compelling the experience (enjoyment, respect, learning, sharing, immersion) is, and the visuals and the hosts really draw you in. They make Barcelona seem more than an escape, making its architecture/art/cuisine play out like a Disneyland trip. Viewers quickly forget about their drab life back home and become the hero in this adventure. An amazing content piece that holds the traveler’s fascination making them believe in the value of this trip. Makes me feel really good about going to Barcelona!

And before travelers make their travel decision, they’ll review how they feel about themselves – their confidence and respect. How they feel about their own self estimation tells them whether it’s a good time to take the trip. They’ve got issues, which we’ll explore below. And this is why your expression of caring and self-esteem recognition/support is so important. Because, if they lose the scent of the satisfaction, and you don’t deliver the vibe or self-esteem support they need, the lead dissolves.

Even your current, long time customers need this emotional support before they book.

Unique, Beautiful Places Make People Feel Good

Santorini Greece is beautiful but what do you do there? Lindsay Silberman uses photographs expertly to make luxury lifestyle travelers feel very good via views, cuisine, and leisure activities in Santorini. A few photos and you’ve got the picture. You may not need the full social media engagement experience to get your points across — that epic morning breakfast view in Santorini says more than a thousand words. Great content makes travelers linger more deeply in the moment.

Vibes Happen in Your Content

Some travelers may just suddenly, out of the blue, decide to take a long-haul trip across the country or overseas. Yet, it’s likely some travel website reached them via search and delivered the support and vibe they wanted – resulting in a booking. It sold because it contained the vibe the traveler was hoping for.

Note: If you don’t have a system to ask, collect and measure how customers feel, you should create one. That data is essential to product offerings, marketing and advertising strategy, services to offer, and tailoring your value proposition for them. Such surveys, well constructed, might be the easiest way to guide and boost your company’s connection to travelers, and keep them loyal. It’s an investment in your future business.

Good Feelings are What You’re Selling

Sell the solution? The solution is stronger good feelings.

Some travelers book a trip to escape pain and frustration – but it’s good feelings they’re after.

When you create a path to fulfillment – you help activate a state of neurochemistry that makes them take their travel intent seriously and commit to a booking. Travel is a big commitment and a lot of good feelings are required before they’ll book.

It takes more time than expected, which is why both impact and engagement time are important.

The feel good success formula: attention > impact > belief > positive neurochemistry > certainty > booking.

How to Build Good Feelings for Travelers

Do more and extend your effort. Strategize a plan that generates travel content creation opportunities. Because authentic, personalized content is what convinces travelers.  Every content piece should improve/support the reader’s emotional state (mood, outlook, optimism, self-esteem, self-confidence, self-worth, trust, certainty) because feeling good is made up of many different emotions.

That’s why you hire a travel content strategist (and graphic designers, videographers and travel writers) – to help you build amazing content experiences that deliver the right mood and generate the right action. As we plan and build this “emotionally supportive and emancipating content” we become more sensitive to each traveler’s hopes and dreams.

Unappreciated Empathy

You’re an experienced pro and aware that empathy is what makes you so compelling to your clients. It’s not your voice and smile really. It’s that they feel you understand their need for travel and what will make them happy. Honing that empathy is really important – it’s going to drive future bookings, revenue and brand value.

Is failure of empathy the real travel business problem?

And why do successful travel professionals travel? Because they’ll be living within the solution they’re selling, feeling good themselves and building empathy for their travel clientele. We come across as more authentic, fun, believable and persuasive when we’re truly in the experiences. living the joy of travel helps make our marketing much richer and relevant to readers/viewers.

The core of the success formula: feeling good. When you focus on it, everything else falls in line.

7. Show Human Connection

Desired Feeling: “I belong.”

Support good self-esteem and their identification with important social groups with images of connectivity to family and friends, and the sharing/giving with them that might be supporting their travel dream. (Note: some people actually travel to enhance their own personal relationships – it’s a disguised message that travel helps lift everyone’s spirit that family/friends too will feel better if we’re able to enjoy a trip and improve our life enjoyment. Which is why people buy trips for family members).

Travel brands likely fail because it’s so hard to appear when travel customers want to book. Showing up at the last minute, means no strong emotional connection is made, and it’s harder to create emotional impact and engage them long enough to create an itinerary.  Yet, if your travel brand becomes a rich source of optimism, inspiration, and emotional renewal, they likely will start their travel planning again from scratch with you and your advisors.

Content That Makes Them Feel Good is Powerful

Making customers feel good is about elevating or transporting them to the mental/emotional state they want to experience. It’s transportation/transformation for whatever reason they need it.

Unfortunately, too often, their daily life erodes their wonderful state quickly. But that’s why they’re looking to you for a nice vacation or trip. Without that deficit, they don’t need travel.  And 99% of travelers might drop the travel dream because they lose their self-esteem and confidence, if only briefly. It’s why conversion rates hover around 1%. We have to do better.

Feel good content can capture their minds and hearts and keep them warm until they successfully book that trip. Feel good content is the caring/nurturing part that reaches, impacts and protects that emotional state.

There is no way your might can or AI-automate good feeling experiences. We’re creating something human and special for them, from a real, credible, trustworthy person who truly feels the value of travel and empathizes with travelers.

Has your travel site lost its way? Travel has changed and some travel pros might not realize they need to adjust and find ways to connect to travelers. Google, the OTA’s and social media monopolies are taking market share. Yet, travel advisors are still vital, maybe more so since digital travel isn’t able to respond to real life travel challenges happening today. Still, if travelers don’t know your travel company exists, you won’t be connecting with them.

Your challenge is to dive in, build your brand, and get your UVP delivered. As a travel marketing strategist, my goal is to help your business stay visible, connected and compelling. Contact me at 416 998 6246 to discuss a plan to get yours turned around and thriving online.
