Older Players Faring Well at the US Open

I’m home sick today with a sore throat, hugging a hot water bottle. I hate being sick. Fortunately, the US Open tennis tournament on TSN is a ray of sunlight in the entertainment wasteland called TV.

The Bryan brothers (twins, 35 years old) are playing Leander Paes (40) and Joseph Stepanek (34) in the mens doubles semi-final. Doubles is less about running and more about positioning quick reactions, and strategy, so brains and experience are more important than conditioning.

The Bryan Brothers (see them in that TV commercial) are trying to become the 2nd doubles team ever to win all the Grand Slam major tournaments in one year. They won the Aussie Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. Only the US Open to go.

The Bryan’s won easily 6-3 in the first set but Paes/Stepanek came back strong to take the 2nd set 6-3. Paes, the 40 year old Indian is a very good volleyer and made some outstanding winners at the net. He showed his sense of humour after the match too.

Paes/Stepanek won the match, ending the Bryan’s dream of winning all 4 Grand Slam tourneys. usopendoubles
